Secretariat was a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Triple Crown in 1973, becoming the first horse in 25 years to do so. He also set a world record for the fastest time in the Belmont Stakes, which still stands today.

Secretariat was born on March 30, 1970, at Meadow Stable in Caroline County, Virginia. He was sired by Bold Ruler and out of Somethingroyal. As a foal, Secretariat was described as being "awkward" and "ungainly," but he quickly grew into a powerful and athletic horse.

Secretariat began his racing career in 1972 at the age of two. He won his first race by 13 lengths, and went on to win seven of his nine starts that year. In 1973, Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby by 2 1/2 lengths, the Preakness Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths, and the Belmont Stakes by a record-setting 31 lengths.

Secretariat's victory in the Belmont Stakes was one of the most dominant performances in the history of horse racing. He set a world record time of 2:24 flat for the 1 1/2-mile race, a record that still stands today.

After his Triple Crown victory, Secretariat retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He sired many successful racehorses, including the 1995 Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch.

Secretariat died on October 4, 1989, at the age of 19. He was buried at Claiborne Farm, and his grave is a popular tourist destination.
