The Battery First Rhode Island Light Artillery was a Union artillery battery that served in the American Civil War. The battery was organized in Providence, Rhode Island, in September 1861, and it was mustered into federal service in November 1861. The battery was assigned to the Army of the Potomac, and it fought in a number of major battles, including the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Battle of the Wilderness. The battery was mustered out of service in June 1865.

Organization and Training

The Battery First Rhode Island Light Artillery was organized by Captain Thomas F. Vaughn. The battery was composed of six guns, and it was manned by 100 men. The battery was trained at Camp Sprague in Rhode Island, and it was mustered into federal service on November 20, 1861.

Service in the Army of the Potomac

The Battery First Rhode Island Light Artillery was assigned to the Army of the Potomac, and it served in a number of major battles. The battery's first major engagement was the Battle of Antietam in September 1862. The battery fought in the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, and it also fought in the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864. The battery was mustered out of service in June 1865.
