Jesse Pomeroy, The Boy Murderer Of 1870s Boston. Making A Monster: Jesse Pomeroy The Boy Murderer Of 1870s Boston

In the annals of American crime, few cases are as chilling as that of Jesse Pomeroy, the boy murderer of 1870s Boston. The youngest person ever convicted of murder in the United States, Pomeroy's crimes shocked the nation and left an enduring legacy of terror.

Pomeroy was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1859. His father was a violent alcoholic, and his mother was a sickly and emotionally unstable woman. From an early age, Pomeroy exhibited signs of cruelty and sadism. He tortured animals and bullied other children. As he grew older, his behavior became increasingly bizarre and violent.

In 1871, Pomeroy began luring young boys to secluded areas, where he would torture and molest them. His victims were typically between the ages of 4 and 10, and many of them were sexually abused before being murdered. Pomeroy's crimes went undetected for several months, but in 1872, he was finally arrested after one of his victims escaped and reported the attack.

Pomeroy's trial was a sensation. The public was horrified by the details of his crimes, and the newspapers dubbed him the "Boy Fiend." Pomeroy was convicted of murder and sentenced to death, but his sentence was later commuted to life in prison.

Pomeroy spent the rest of his life in solitary confinement at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Walpole. He died in 1926 at the age of 67. To this day, Pomeroy's crimes remain a source of fascination and horror. His case is a chilling reminder of the darkness that can lurk in the human heart.

The Trial

Pomeroy was sentenced to death, but his sentence was later commuted to life in prison. He spent the rest of his life in solitary confinement at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Walpole.
