Brian Roberts was born in London in 1914. He developed a passion for exploration at a young age, and in 1939 he joined the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). Roberts spent the next few years exploring Antarctica, and in 1947 he was appointed leader of the BAS station at Signy Island.
