The story begins in the small town of Vicksburg, Mississippi, where Sarahbeth Henley is living a quiet life as a teacher. When the war breaks out, her world is turned upside down. Her father joins the Confederate Army, and her brother is killed in battle. Sarahbeth is left to fend for herself and her mother, and she soon finds herself drawn into the conflict.
At the same time, in the Union-held city of New Orleans, Eleanor Stanton is also struggling to find her place in the war. Her father is a wealthy plantation owner who supports the Confederacy, but Eleanor herself is a staunch abolitionist. She volunteers her time at a hospital for wounded soldiers, and she soon meets Sarahbeth.
Despite their different backgrounds, Sarahbeth and Eleanor become friends. They share their stories and their hopes for the future. And as the war rages on, they find strength in each other's company.
