Early Life
Paul Brickhill was born in Melbourne, Australia, on 14 September 1916. He was the son of a successful businessman and grew up in a comfortable home. Brickhill was a bright and curious child, and he developed a passion for flying at an early age. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1939, and was posted to England in 1940.
The Battle of Britain
Brickhill was one of the few Australian pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain. He flew with No. 603 Squadron, RAF, and quickly established himself as a skilled and courageous pilot. He shot down several enemy aircraft during the battle, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery.
The Big Show
After the Battle of Britain, Brickhill was posted to the United States, where he served as a flight instructor. He also began writing about his experiences as a fighter pilot. In 1943, he published his first book, The Big Show. The book was a huge success, and it is still considered one of the best accounts of the Battle of Britain.
Later Life
After the war, Brickhill continued to write about aviation and military history. He also worked as a journalist and broadcaster. He died in London in 1991, at the age of 74.
