Meyer Lansky was born in Grodno, Russia, in 1902. His family emigrated to the United States when he was nine years old, and they settled in New York City's Lower East Side. Lansky quickly learned the ways of the streets, and he soon became involved in petty crime. By the time he was a teenager, he was a full-fledged member of the Jewish mob.

In the early 1920s, Lansky teamed up with Charlie "Lucky" Luciano, another rising star in the Jewish mob. Together, they formed a powerful alliance that would dominate organized crime in New York City for decades to come. Lansky was the brains of the operation, while Luciano was the muscle. They controlled gambling, racketeering, and other illegal activities, and they were feared and respected by both criminals and law enforcement alike.

Lansky was also a major figure in the development of the National Crime Syndicate, a loose association of organized crime families that controlled crime throughout the United States. He was one of the architects of the Syndicate's "commission," a governing body that settled disputes and resolved conflicts between the different families.

In the 1930s, Lansky's empire began to crumble. He was indicted on racketeering charges, and he was forced to flee the United States. He spent the next few years living in Europe, but he eventually returned to New York City in 1946.

After his return to the United States, Lansky continued to be involved in organized crime, but he never regained the power and influence he had once enjoyed. He was again indicted on racketeering charges in 1959, and he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was released from prison in 1969, and he lived a relatively quiet life until his death in 1983.

Meyer Lansky was a complex and contradictory figure. He was a ruthless gangster who was responsible for countless crimes, but he was also a brilliant businessman who helped to shape the development of organized crime in the United States. His story is a fascinating tale of ambition, violence, and redemption, and it is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of organized crime.
