The Life and Work of Thomas Dudley: A Pillar of Early Massachusetts
The Early Years of Thomas Dudley
Thomas Dudley was born in England in 1576, the son of a successful merchant. He received a classical education at Cambridge University and then pursued a career in law. In 1614, he married Dorothy Yorke, a woman of wealth and social standing.
Dudley's Role in the Massachusetts Bay Colony
In 1630, Dudley joined a group of Puritan dissenters who were seeking to establish a new colony in North America. They believed that the Church of England had become too corrupt and that they could create a more pure and righteous society in the New World. The group, led by John Winthrop, sailed for Massachusetts on the ships Arbella and Mary and John.
Dudley was one of the signatories of the Mayflower Compact, and he served as the second governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. During his tenure, he helped to establish the colony's government, laws, and economy. He was also a strong advocate for education and played a key role in the founding of Harvard College.
