My great-grandfather, Luigi, left Italy in 1900 with his wife and two young children. They traveled to America in search of a better life. They arrived at Ellis Island, the gateway to America, on a cold winter day. They were processed and then sent to live in a crowded tenement building in New York City.
Luigi worked long hours in a factory to support his family. He dreamed of becoming an American citizen and owning his own home. He studied English and civics at night. In 1906, he became a naturalized citizen. He was proud to be an American.
When the Great War broke out in 1914, Luigi was too old to serve. But his two sons, Antonio and Giovanni, were old enough to fight. They both enlisted in the United States Army. They fought bravely in France. Antonio was killed in action in 1918. Giovanni was wounded but survived the war.
After the war, Giovanni returned to America. He married and had a family. He worked hard and eventually became a successful businessman. He was a proud American and a devoted father.
This is the story of my family's journey from Ellis Island to the Great War. It is a story that is both heartbreaking and inspiring. It is a story that reminds us of the sacrifices that our ancestors made for our freedom.
