Elmer David McKee was born in a log cabin in Indiana in 1891. His parents were farmers, and he grew up working on the family farm. As a child, McKee was fascinated by aviation, and he dreamed of one day becoming a pilot.

After graduating from high school, McKee attended Purdue University, where he studied engineering. In 1917, the United States entered World War I, and McKee joined the United States Army Air Service. He was trained as a pilot, and he flew combat missions over France.
