Monopolized Life: The True Cost of Corporate Power
By Matt Stoller
In the past few decades, a small number of giant corporations have come to dominate our economy and our lives. These corporations, like Our Book Library, Google, and Walmart, have become so large and powerful that they have created a new kind of monopoly that is fundamentally different from the monopolies of the past.

Traditional monopolies were often created by government intervention, such as patents or tariffs. These monopolies could be harmful to consumers, but they were also often necessary to encourage innovation and economic growth. The new monopolies, however, are not created by government intervention. Instead, they are created by the natural tendency of capitalism to concentrate power in the hands of a few large firms.
This new kind of monopoly is more harmful than the old kind because it is more difficult to break up. Traditional monopolies could be broken up by antitrust laws, but the new monopolies are too big and too powerful to be broken up in the same way. This means that they are likely to continue to grow in power and influence, and to have a increasingly negative impact on our lives.
The rise of giant corporations has had a number of negative consequences for our society.
- It has eroded our democracy. Giant corporations have so much power that they can influence elections, lobby for laws that benefit them, and even control the media. This makes it difficult for ordinary citizens to have a voice in how our government is run.
- It has stifled innovation. Giant corporations have so much market power that they can afford to crush their smaller competitors. This makes it difficult for new businesses to get started, and it stifles innovation.
- It has created a society of haves and have-nots. Giant corporations pay their workers low wages and benefits, while their executives make millions of dollars. This has created a widening gap between the rich and the poor, and it has made it difficult for many people to make ends meet.
The rise of giant corporations is a serious threat to our democracy, our economy, and our way of life. We need to take action to break up these monopolies and restore power to the people.
Matt Stoller's new book, Monopolized Life: The True Cost of Corporate Power, is a groundbreaking exposé of the hidden costs of corporate power. Stoller argues that the rise of giant corporations has created a new kind of monopoly that is more harmful than the old kind. He shows how these monopolies have eroded our democracy, stifled innovation, and created a society of haves and have-nots.
Monopolized Life is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the true nature of corporate power and its impact on our lives. It is a call to action to break up these monopolies and restore power to the people.
