This graphic novel tells the true story of a young slave named Frederick Douglass. Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland in 1818. He was separated from his mother at a young age and was sold to a series of different owners. Douglass endured many hardships during his time as a slave, including beatings, whippings, and starvation. But he never gave up hope of freedom.

In 1845, Douglass escaped to freedom. He made his way to New York City, where he became a leading abolitionist. Douglass wrote three autobiographies, which became bestsellers.
