Duke Paoa Kahanamoku (August 24, 1890 – January 22, 1968) was a Hawaiian surfer, swimmer, water polo player, and Olympic medalist, who is widely regarded as the father of modern surfing. Kahanamoku was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and began surfing at a young age. He quickly became one of the most skilled surfers in the world, and in 1911, he won the first Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship, which is still held today.

In addition to his surfing career, Kahanamoku was also a successful swimmer and water polo player. He won three Olympic medals in swimming (two golds and one silver) and two Olympic medals in water polo (one gold and one silver). He was also the first person to swim the Ka'iwi Channel between the islands of Oahu and Molokai.

Kahanamoku's accomplishments in the water were matched by his success on the land. He was a talented musician and singer, and he also served as a sheriff of Honolulu and a member of the Hawaii Territorial Senate. He was also a vocal advocate for Hawaiian culture and independence.

Kahanamoku died in Honolulu in 1968 at the age of 77. He is remembered as one of the greatest surfers, swimmers, and water polo players of all time. He is also remembered as a cultural icon who helped to spread the popularity of surfing around the world.

In 1990, the United States Postal Service issued a postage stamp in honor of Kahanamoku. In 1994, he was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame. In 1998, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. In 2002, he was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame.

Kahanamoku's legacy continues to inspire surfers and swimmers around the world. He is a true legend of the water, and his story is one that will continue to be told for generations to come.
